I had emailed the store about a couple of maps we had seen on their website, and their responses were always prompt and extremely helpful. When we arrived not only did the map we chose look even better in person, but the frame they had used was amazing quality.
One of the owners spent the time to go over the map with us, going over the details within the map, the creator of the map, year made, etc. Overall it was an excellent experience and this map will make a wonderful best man gift for my fiance’s brother, who live on the cape. I highly suggest stopping by this shop! We’ll definitely be back.
My husband and I rushed here after our whale watcher cruise hoping to find something nice to remember our anniversary weekend. We arrived about 30 minutes before the shop closed. I expected to have a quick browse then hurried out the door. That did not happen. The owners were extremely friendly and helpful. We weren’t sure what exactly we wanted, so they pointed us to the direction of different maps and we began looking. They have a wonderful inventory, so many interesting maps to look at. We quickly got lost in the maps and could have stayed there for hours!! Next time we visit Chatham we will have to allow more time at Maps of Antiquity. It truly is a must see if you are in the area. The owners are knowledgeable and will help you find exactly what you are looking for.
This is a wonderful map store. They have maps from all over the place and everything is very organized and easy to look through. If you’re looking for something specific they will help you find it and show you some specialty things that aren’t out. They have a wide range of original maps and reproductions and variable price points. If you need something shipped, framed or rolled to take back while traveling it isn’t a problem. I look forward to stopping in the next time I’m in the area.
We have visited Maps of Antiquity several times over the years. We have purchased maps there as well as having some restorations, including cleaning and a fairly complex restoration which involved restoring a missing piece that someone had cut out of an 1855 map of our hometown. We have also had framing done there. All dealings with Danielle and Robert have been friendly, courteous and professional. We always stop in when we are on the Cape.
I found maps of Antiquity online. Their range of maps and comparative maps is astonishing. Service, shipping and correspondence was professional. I can highly recommend this to map-freaks like me but also to others with more general interests in history, geology and geography. It’s a treasure!
My husband’s job brings us to different countries every 2-4 years, and each country becomes part of our family’s memories and journey. We were desperately looking for an antique map of El Salvador, but could not find a verifiably genuine map anywhere, although there are plenty of fakes floating around. Were delighted to find a beautiful map via Maps of Antiquity website, and had it professionally framed with them. Not cheap, but absolutely worth it. Now, two years later, I have just purchased another map, and communication was easy, with timely and thorough replies for emails. A very reliable, unique and most excellent place. Can’t wait to visit in person one day, and will keep on making online purchases from them meanwhile. Highly recommend.
The staff was very friendly and welcoming–even told me as a first time visitor what was where. They asked me what I was interested in and helped me find something. I will make it a point to come back here on any future visits to Chatham, that is, if I don’t return on this trip!
Recently I read about Maps of Antiquity. Being of a curious nature, I went to their website and found the most beautiful maps dating back centuries. My wife and I take frequent trips to Jamaica and I found the most beautiful map of Jamaica, circa 1821. Upon its safe arrival in short time I took it to have framed and the framing was more than the map! The service was also fantastic. Buying a map from Maps of Antiquity was a great experience and I will do it again. Mark Bryant, Paducah, Kentucky
We found this place on trip advisor and were excited to check it out. We showed up just after they closed but the owners were so friendly they invited us in anyways to poke around, even after we told them we were “just looking”. The place was packed full of so many original maps from so many places from all years. I felt like a kid looking through them all. We ended up almost buying several but settled on a very cool repro map of cape cod. Well worth the trip we made out of our way and they were so knowledgeable and patient with all our questions!!
We ordered an automobile road map printed in 1900 of Cape Cod and the Martha’s Vineyard area. Given the age and the fact that older auto maps are often ruined along the folded edges, I called to get a clear description of the condition of the map. The map arrived beautifully packaged, on time, and in the exact condition described. I would definitely buy another map from Maps of Antiquity.
“I’M THRILLED! The ‘piece’ arrived about 1/2 hour ago and is already hanging on the wall. I couldn’t be more pleased – it’s magnificent! Thank you all for everything. The only reason I stumbled on your website is because of the VISTAPRINT ad on television for business cards……just checking to see if the people in their ad are real….they are! Then your business was of interest since I’ve always loved maps and geography. On a whim, I clicked search for WHATELY and the rest is history. This entire experience has been awesome – you are wonderful people to do business with. Thanks again.”
We were cleaning out the upstairs of our house in preparation for renovations and we came across an old map of Palestine that my husband had for 30 years. We contacted Maps of Antiquity and they were interested in purchasing the map. They were so nice to deal with. The check arrived as promised and for more money than they originally quoted us. Great bunch of people!
For Christmas I bought a map of the Harwich Port area from Maps of Antiquity for my son who now lives in Austin,TX, and has several old maps of other places he has lived. He was so excited and thrilled to receive this 1907 map of his grandparents town where he spent many happy summers. Danielle and Bob enthusiastically helped me find just the right map for him. Thank you!
We ordered a one of a kind map transferred on to tile set in a cherry coffee table base as a Christmas present. This had never been done by the artist who was making simpler tables for Maps of Antiquity. Danielle never failed to keep us informed of the tables progress and was determined to have this present ready for Christmas. The final touches were still being completed on Christmas Eve but Maps of Antiquity arranged to have the artist deliver it in person on Christmas morning. It is fabulous!!! What great customer service. A rare thing in today’s world.
During a summer trip to cape cod, we were fortunate to stumble across this unique shop. We just loved exploring the maps of yesteryear. Well, when it came time to find a unique Christmas gift for my husband, Maps of Antiquity was the firtst place that came time – not a big impersonal ‘box store’. Viewing and purchasing from the website was easy and pleasant. My map arrived just days later, in a secure and sturdy tube. I can’t wait for my husband to unwrap his antique map on Christmas morning. Thank you.
We went into Maps of Antiquity thinking we’d be able to pick out a souvenir map in a couple of minutes for our kids as a gift. However, the owners of the store spent 30 minutes with us picking out the perfect treasure and pirate maps that our kids will love for years to come. If you’re looking for the perfect way to remember your trip to Cape Cod (and don’t want the typical cheesy tourist souvenirs) visit Maps of Antiquity and you won’t be disappointed.
My wife and I are both nautical fans. I grew up on Cape Cod and she grew up in Maine. The team at Maps of Antiquity were extremely helpful in finding charts for both regions. Not only was I able to buy the charts, but the team did a phenomenal job mounting and framing the work. Pieces of art! They were a hit with the wife!!
oh, and they can put the maps or charts on tables or make tiles as well! I think I found my next gift!!
My husband has an uncanny knack for guessing what his Christmas gifts are, so this year I was determined to find something he would never think of but still love. I stumbled across Maps of Antiquity online and found the perfect gift when I wasn’t even sure what I was looking for. I don’t know anything about maps so I was very excited when I found one of sailing routes and lighthouse locations around New Brunswick in 1906. Since my husband is from that area, loves sailing and lighthouses, this was a no brainer! There was no picture, but I sent an email to ask for one and that night the website was updated with one and an email was sent to me to let me know. I looked on other websites to compare product and prices and no one else had anything close to what I found here, and no one else had reasonable prices either. I got the map less than a week after I ordered it and it was very securely packaged and labeled fragile, so there was no chance of it being damaged during shipping. The sales people here were courteous and prompt and I would definitely do business with them again. The map is even more perfect than the pictures portrayed, and I’m so excited that I’m not sure I can wait for Christmas!
We were looking for an old map of Cape Cod and the Islands to hang above our fireplace and we found just what we were looking for at Maps of Antiquity. Everyone there was so helpful. They customized our map’s matting and framing and even offered to help us hang it. The finished product looks absolutely beautiful and we couldn’t be happier. If you would like to make a statement in your home with an elegant wall piece, look no further than Maps of Antiquity.
I had a wonderful experience looking through the various maps online. When I requested to see a few maps that did not have images, pictures were sent to me almost immediately. I selected one as a gift and once it arrived it certainly exceeded all expectations and was a huge hit on Christmas morning. Thank you!
Love maps and maps of Antiquity is a favorite destination – they can customize sizes and on some maps customize color as well, they also offer framing and are quite adept of helping you select the perfect compliment to your map. They are knowledgeable, friendly and timely. A fun stop in a charming cape house!
I found Maps of Antiquity online after searching for an old, nice map for my boyfriend for Christmas. They were so pleasant and helpful in helping me find exactly what I wanted and my map arrived exactly in the shape noted and on time. I highly recommend going through this lovely small business for all of your map needs!
Great experience! Super staff. Comprehensive inventory. Meticulous shipping, Helpful, calm manner of business, Highly recommend their shop. As a first time trip the cape it was a nice surprise and added to our holiday and now several pieces of art are gracing the walls of our home.
It was an absolute pleasure working with Danielle + Bob at Maps of Antiquity. They helped us pick out a great antique map, from afar, that we gave as a wedding gift to dear friends. Danielle was extremely responsive over the phone, and Bob did a professional (and quick) job matting and preparing the map. My only regret is that I didn’t give myself enough time to browse their wonderful collection at the Chatham shop — this shop is a must see, a treasure chest of wonderful maps with equally wonderful owners.
I will surely call Danielle + Bob the next time I need a map!
I’ve gotten maps here for birthday and wedding presents and they went over so well. Bob, Danielle, and Kathryn are incredible helpful–I got the birthday present in person and the wedding present online and both processes were incredibly easy. They helped me find exactly what I was looking for and brought out additional maps that I might be interested in. They have a very, very large selection of maps, so you can find practically anything you want. They also framed the wedding gift and shipped it for me and did a great job with that–my package was on a train that derailed and the package had a gash in it when it arrived to my friend, but the map itself was safe and sound because it was packaged so well, attributable to Bob and Danielle’s care, as well as the expert shipper they went to. Definitely check it out, as these maps make great gifts and decorations and are just plain cool to look at and learn and talk about!
In searching for ideas to furnish my newly purchased Cape home, I came across an ad for Maps of Antiquity in a magazine and decided to take a ride to Chatham to view the store. The staff was extremely helpful, and Bob (PhD in History) is a wealth of knowledge! I purchased the first two maps of many for my home, and was extremely impressed with the quality of the maps, and with the framing. I purchased a tourist map of Eastham from 1888, and an antique nautical map of Cape Cod which Kathryn suggested I have colorized by their local artist. It is framed and placed over my fireplace in my living room, and is spectacular! I highly recommend this store, and their courteous staff makes browsing very enjoyable. I am returning soon to pick out antique postcards from the Cape to have framed and placed throughout my home (Bob’s suggestion).
We were looking for a special map for our friend’s 80th Birthday. The map we were looking for was to be from the Hartford, CT area. Bob and Danielle help us look through their extensive selection of maps for the area and with their help, we found exactly what we were looking for! To complicate matters, I waited a little longer that I should have and had a short deadline. They were more than accommodating. Bob and Danielle gave us very good guidance especially with the mat selection and framing material. There are just so many selections. Bob also reinforced that map from behind giving it a little more strength, an extra that was not expected. The gift was ready as promised and it looked beautiful. It left our friend speechless. Maps of Antiquity is truly a unique experience not to be missed.
For my husband’s birthday, I wanted to buy an antique map of Italy. I was familiar with seeing the store on Cape Cod during our many trips to the Cape. After checking out their detailed web site, I knew they had what I was looking for!! I stopped by the store, and looked at the map I thought I wanted on line. Of course, once I got there, seeing the maps and learning about their history was very impressive. I not only bought my husband a larger size map, but an antique map of Ireland for our friend’s big 6-0 birthday. Their choice of frames was large and workmanship perfect.
Over the past 5 years, I have purchased 7 or 8 maps from MoA and had several of those framed at the shop. The quality on every level is exceptional. From the time you walk in the door and receive friendly, extremely knowledgeable service to when you pick up your finished beautifully framed piece, MoA is a delight. Quality, selection, price, service…..Maps of Antiquity is second to none!
My wife and I randomly stopped at this quaint store during our summer vacation to Chatham. Don’t let the small exterior fool you as Danielle and Bob have assembled thousands of maps from all over the world. We ended up staying almost two hours as we viewed dozens of maps from the locations we desired. After selecting two 1800’s originals, they both worked with us to properly mat and frame our pieces. One of the maps was even set up to be viewed from both sides. They also insured that our maps were properly and safely delivered to our home and that we were completely satisfied with the end result. I would highly recommend them in your search. Just remember to save enough time as the selection can be opverwhelming, even if you do know what you want!
I stopped in here while traveling with a friend because my husband loves maps and I wanted to pick up a souvenir for him. This place is packed with more maps than you can believe, from all over and from many years ago to more current. However, they are well organized and the friendly and helpful owners were able to find the perfect map in just a matter of a few minutes. I enjoyed chatting with them and they took extra care to package my map between some cardboard for safe traveling. My husband was thrilled with the map and we plan on visiting this store together some day as I know he would be like a kid in a candy store.
Maps of Antiquity has a remarkable selection of antique and excellent reproduction maps. The owners are friendly professional and very knowledgeable about the maps in their inventory. They were ready to answer questions and offer advice. The framing was of superior quality and perfect for the subject matter.
My wife and I, with our 8 year old son, visited Maps of Antiquity on a Tuesday afternoon, just to see what the store was about. The first thing that strikes you is the quality of the maps prepared, mounted and displayed in the shopping area. And then, the sheer number of maps. from anywhere. We are from Bolton, CT, and Bob very quickly led me to 2 maps of Bolton, and another of Tolland County, which Bolton is a part of. Bob walked us through what is important to the quality of a map. Once we decided which map to buy, Danielle showed us their extensive offerings for framing and matting, and helped us choose the right mix for presentation.
We were only on vacation for the week, so we made arrangements for the framed map to be shipped to us at home. To our surprise, Danielle called us on Thursday to let us know the map was framed, protected and ready for pickup.
Short story: great product, reasonable price, superior service – twice.
I was searching for an antique map of Cape Cod to have framed as a present for my best friend. I know nothing about maps or where to find them. I was ducking into antique stores all over the cape until my father found a website for Maps of Antiquity in Chatham. When I went, I was still unsure of what I wanted and I certainly couldn’t articulate my idea, but the staff was so incredibly helpful and knowledgeable that they guided me right to the picture I had in my head. The map was also totally in my price range. Then, they framed it for me! I am entirely indecisive, but they helped me to pick out a frame, matting, and glass in probably a half an hour. Initially, I did think that the framing was a little expensive, but when I went to pick up the finished product, I would have paid twice as much! My map is beautiful! I really just couldn’t be any happier with my map and with Maps of Antiquity!!
Have passed this wonderful shop so many times over the years. I was looking for antique map of cap cod and finally stopped in. Found what I was looking for, chose matting and frame and finished product was shipped to my out of state home. I am so happy with framed map. Everyone was so helpful and kind while choosing map. Highly recommend stopping in when in the area.
My now roommate and I spent a wonderful afternoon at Maps of Antiquity. We came upon it almost like magic; we were driving along discussing how, if we could afford it, we would love to find some antique-type maps to hang in our future apartment, and not thirty seconds later we drove by the shop’s sign. It was the strangest thing! We made plans to go the next day and were greeted very warmly by Bob and Danielle the following afternoon. We shared with them our particular interest in maps of Spain and Ireland (due to our studies abroad) and also noted that we were on a somewhat limited budget and hoped we would be able to find something great that we could still actually afford. They were very respectful of the confines of our budgets in showing us many beautiful options while even pulling out the awe-inspiring wall maps and charts for us to explore just for fun. It was a thrill to be shown such beautiful bits of history by people just as excited about them as we were.
I had also set out to purchase a housewarming gift for my sister and brother-in-law and found an absolutely lovely 1699 map of Greece (my family is of Greek descent). The matting, which Bob had done himself, was stunningly intricate and perfectly suited for such a gift. Bob and Danielle, once again, keeping in mind my budget, were then kind enough to frame it for a very, very reasonable price. They also handled the shipping of the piece out of state, and my family members in Indiana were amazed by how securely it was packaged and even more astonished by the beauty of piece itself.
We even had our equally gorgeous maps of Spain and Ireland framed by Danielle and Bob and had the pleasure of meeting Kathryn when picking up the finished pieces a few weeks later. They are all lovely, personable, knowledgeable, and clearly passionate about their work and what they offer. We just throroughly enjoyed our experience with Bob, Danielle, Kathryn and Amelia (the name, I believe, of Bob and Danielle’s delightfully mellow feline) from beginning to end and will, no doubt, find our way back to Maps of Antiquity whenever we next have the opportunity.
I recently purchased several vintage nautical charts – along with an equally old chart tube – from Maps of Antiquity and was very pleased with all aspects of my purchases. The service I received was prompt, helpful and friendly. If I asked for additional pictures – they promptly sent them. Shipping was also very fast and included USPS Priority Mail with tracking number. I learned a lot about old charts from the well informed staff and look forward to continuing my relationship with this fine company. Highly recommended!
Tucked away on Rt.28(Main Street) on the way into Chatham we found this fabulous shop located in a historic house that is also a affordable B+B. The maps are works of art! Everything from reproductions to ancient maps, all at very reasonable prices. We always find great pieces and the owners are friendly and extremely knowledgable.
with maps of antiquity i found a quality selection of facinating and unique maps and reproductions. their sincere interest in me as a customer, and the service they provided to me was beyond compare. anyone looking for quality, service, and fair pricing will be very pleased with them and with their fine selections.
I no longer live on Cape Cod, but always stop by the shop when I am in the area. They have so many cool things – not just maps! I first discovered the shop after receiving a 1917 map of the Chatham coastline as a gift. Since then I have purchased three maps (two reproductions and one original) for gifts which have drawn lots of ooohs and ahhs from the recipients. For myself I have an 1800s reproduction print of San Francisco Bay as well as a hand painted original plate from a french natural history book depicting several seabirds. Plenty of items (reproductions AND originals) in the $25 – $50 range so there is something for everyone. The owners are always unbelievably friendly and helpful. Be sure to ask if you don’t see what you are looking for because they just don’t have room to display everything, but they certainly know where everything is filed away. Highly recommended!
I have been visiting Cape Cod, and specifically Chatham for over 50 years and stumbled into this treasure trove of a store this summer. What an interesting place. Maps from all eras and locations around the world. The staff is extremely friendly and knowledgeable. Bob is such a historian – knowing the back-story for all that he sells. If you have any interest in maps of any kind, you have to stop in for a visit. This place is open year round, and if you don’t see what you want – just ask. Thanks to Bob, Danielle and Kathryn for assisting us with our two purchases. We’ll be back!
We have visited Maps of Antiquity several times and on each occasion Danielle, Bob, and their staff have been extremely helpful and accommodating. The store is a wonderful place to visit and spend some time looking through a terrific collection of antique maps, prints, and post cards. We have made three purchases – a large, classic road map of Cape Cod (circa 1905) for our family room and two late 19th century maps – one of Portland, ME and the other of Westchester County, NY – as gifts for our children. These maps were beautifully framed by Bob, and they are prominently displayed in our homes. We highly recommend a trip to Maps of Antiquity. It’s a fun place to visit and the owners are very knowledgeable, friendly, and customer-service oriented. Just as we did, we’re sure you’ll come away with a great impression and, most likely, a historic map for your home.
We found Maps of Antiquity after having breakfast at Grumpy’s (also on the Cape) and seeing an old Cape Cod map on the wall. We looked online for local places or websites that specialized in antique maps and came across the very detailed website for Maps of Antiquity (great place to start your browsing) and we were very happy to see that they were located not too far away. The store is actually the first floor of a quaint home that is stocked with many antique maps and drawings of all sizes (and ages). Of course, they have many Cape Cod related items but they also have items relating to other parts of the US and the world. The staff/owners are fantastic: friendly and patient, while giving you space to browse leisurely. They also do custom framing and will ship your pieces (via a 3rd party). We ordered several framed pieces and they all arrived safely and for a relatively reasonable price. We will visit again and you should too if you have any interest at all in maps or antiques! (note: they sell pieces at a wide range of price points so there is a good chance you can find something in your budget, but the cheaper pieces are likely to be replicas/reprints).
My wife and I have purchased several maps from Maps of Antiquity. One which generates a great deal of discussion is a map of Cape Cod in the early 1930’s illustrating many of the most beautiful sights off the main roads and highways. For example, it displays out of the way beaches, marinas, golf courses, the train tracks (which are now bicycle paths) and the old Chatham train depot. Much has changed – but much remains, and that’s the charm of Cape Cod.
Bob always does a terrific job framing the maps – and is more particular about his work than anyone who has ever done framing for us.
Danielle, Bob and Kathryn are wonderful people with a passion for what they do. They make a visit to their store a trip back in time with them as your tour guides.
