A Map of the Town of Chatham, Mass. - Maker: Eldridge
Antique uncolored 1890 folding map of Chatham, Cape Cod, Massachusetts, by George Eldridge. This unusual map was developed by the Hotel Chatham to give to their guests. Key landmarks, streets, the Chatham Railroad, and businesses of the time are indicated. The Chatham Hotel was Chatham's first luxury hotel, developed a little before its time. In an age before cars, it was necessary to take a 3 mile wagon ride from the nearest train station to reach the property. One story is that even before reaching the hotel, many visitors declared that they would never suffer the bumpy wagon ride over sandy roads again. The severe economic recession of 1893 lead to the failure of the elegant hotel after only about 3 years. Fortunately for Chatham and its fine lodging, transportation has changed a lot since then. In very good overall restored antique condition. It has been de-acidified, cleaned, and backed with light-weight tissue. It comes with a booklet (not attached to the map). Measures approx. 28.25 x 26.25 inches to the neatline.

George Eldridge - Maker:
In 1854, Chatham's very own George Eldridge published the first edition of Eldridge's Pilot for Vineyard Sound and Monomoy Shoals. The 32 page, grey, paper-covered volume, which had no recorded price, was devoted to nautical "dangers," and embellished with his personal, oft-amusing observations. In 1870, George Eldridge sent his son to Vineyard Haven to peddle his father's books and charts. Young George was only too pleased to relocate, as Vineyard Haven was, at that time, second only to the English Channel as the busiest harbor in all the world. It was not uncommon to see as many as one hundred schooners anchored off the coast awaiting a favorable current. Ever the burgeoning entrepreneur, George Junior set off in a catboat to sell his father's charts from boat to boat. During these transactions, mariners often wished to know when the current would turn to run East or West in the Sound. The Younger George made careful observations, and one day, while in the ship chandlery of Charles Holmes, he set down the first draft of a tide table that remains in use to this day. With the help of the elder Eldridge, Young George devised tide tables for each of the harbors he visited. First published in 1875, the Eldridge tide table became the indispensable book for all who sailed the tempestuous Atlantic Ocean. At a time when countless vessels foundered and met sad ends among the hidden rocks and shifting shoals, Eldridge constantly updated his publications to help fellow seafarers navigate unusual currents into the safety of well-mapped harbors. It's impossible to say just how many sailors this father and son team saved from a watery grave, but their legacy of careful observation is still carried out by their descendants, and when we look upon their charts in our shop, we can't help but be proud that both Eldridges called our quaint little seaside town their home.

A Map of the Town of Chatham, Mass. - Reproduction - Maker: Eldridge
Extra high quality one to one reproduction of the 1890 folding map of Chatham, Cape Cod, Massachusetts, by George Eldridge. One story is that even before reaching the hotel, many visitors, declared that they would never ride in the bumpy wagon ride over sandy roads again. The severe economic recession of 1893 lead to the failure of the elegant hotel after only about 3 years. Fortunately for Chatham and its fine lodging, a lot has changed since then. No. 1 Eldridge's New Chart of Vineyard Sound and Nantucket Shoals - Maker: Eldridge
Antique nautical chart showing Nantucket Sound, Vineyard Sound, and the shoals near Nantucket and Monomoy, by George Eldridge, copyright 1894 and published by S. Thaxter & Son in 1904. This chart encompasses the area from the Elizabeth Islands to the shoals east of Chatham and Nantucket. Includes all of the small harbors on the south side of the Cape, such as Osterville, Waquoit, Lewis Bay, Chatham, and Woods Hole. Yellow marks indicate lighthouses or light ships. Red lines indicate the area where the lighthouses show red. These charts were hand colored (sometimes by Eldridge's daughters). Well known for their graphic appearance, Eldridge's charts showed only the information necessary for sailors and sea men, in contrast to the government's charts of the time that included topographic information. This clarity made their charts quite popular with navigators and that popularity continues today, although for more aesthetic reasons. Very good condition with some surface soil and two stamps that indicate the chart was sold by Steamer Susie D in Vineyard Haven. Some pencil plotting. Backed with original linen. Approx. 24.5 x 48.5 inches to the chart edges. **NOTE- because this map requires extra insurance for shipping, an additional charge will appear on your card after your original purchase.
