North America
Antique hand colored map of North America, published in Olney's School Geography in 1844 by Robinson. This neat map shows the continent during a time of great change. Texas was annexed in 1845 and the US acquired the land from California to Texas in 1848 after the Mexican-American war. The dating on this map is a bit odd because it was "Entered according to Act of Congress in the year 1844" yet the coloring of the map reflects later changes. Texas is labeled as though it were still separate but is colored as part of the US. The size of Mexico is noted as 1,100,000 square miles, which would have been its pre-war size. It is possible that the printing plate was continued to be used and the coloring adapted for the new changes until a new plate could be made (although it is a bit worrisome that a school geography would have noticeably inaccurate information!). On this map England owned Canada and Russia owned Alaska. The map also indicates populations, distances, and symbols with meanings that are not quite clear. Good antique condition with a few minor stains, some edge wear, and light toning. Measures approx. 8.75 x 10.75 inches to the neatline.
