A rare antique uncolored map of the world by T. Conder, 1778, "Engraved for Moore's New and Compleat Collection of Voyages and Travels." This map is rarely seen on the market. Notable features include the tracks of Commodore Anson 1740-1744 and Captain Cook 1773-1775. While Great Britain was at war with Spain in 1740, Commodore George Anson led a squadron of eight ships on a mission to disrupt or capture Spain's Pacific possessions. Much was still unknown at the time of this map's publication, including the northwest coast of North America, Antarctica, the southern Pacific, and more. Tasmania (Diemans Land) is shown attached to Australia (New Holland). New Zealand is well rendered. Greenland connects to North America. New York extends to the Gulf of St Lawrence. Florida stretches to the Mississippi River, as do all of the southern east coast states. Also includes Hispaniola and the Great Wall of China. Hawaii is notably absent. A delicate decorative border surrounds the map. The year 1778 appears to have been inked in after the map was printed. Very good to excellent condition with overall toning. Some tiny spots and imperfections as expected in a map of this age. With folds as issued. Measures approx. 12 x 18.75 inches to the platemark and 14.5 x 19 inches to the page edges. **SOLD**
