Chinese Version of the 1936 Frank Dorn Map of Beijing or Peking, China - Maker: Frank Dorn
Printed color map of Peking, now Beijing, China by Frank Dorn. Originally produced in 1936, this is a later Chinese edition from 1988. All of the English captions and information is translated into Chinese, which is printed throughout the map in very small characters. The original map was published with a book called "A Map and History of Peiping" and the map covers all of Beijing as contained within the old city walls as well as parts of the surrounding area. This map is packed with illustrations that represent important sites, people, and the history and culture of the city. Dorn moved to Beijing in 1934 where he studie Chinese and eventually created this map before serving in World War 2. This later publication of his map features a wealth of information on the back side about the history and culture of the people and the development of the city, all written in Chinese, including a sheet of gold leaf, a bar of music, and a list of national relics. With folds as issued. This map is in very good condition with some slight wear at the folds and a small cut in the upper right corner. Measures approx. 30 x 22.75 inches to the paper edges.

A Correct Draught of the River Thames from its Spring in Gloucester Shire, to its Influx into the Sea, with a Table of all the Bridges, Locks, Wears &c. thereupon The Tolls payable at each and their d - Maker: Bowen/London Magazine
Rare antique map of the course of the Thames River, by Thomas Bowen and published in the London Magazine in 1775. Very detailed, showing counties, towns, villages, roads, waterways, distances, notable sites, and a table related to the tolls. Very little information about this map is available. Bowles produced a similar map around this time (online sources suggest Bowles created one in 1774 and an updated version in 1793, although I cannot find any examples of a 1774 version). In 1818 a reader wrote to the Monthly Magazine and said that they used this map on a pleasure excursion on the Thames and that the experience was so enjoyable that they went again from another location. Antique hand colored map of the world in two hemispheres with a chart of the comparative lengths of rivers at bottom. Africa is the only continent where humans are noted. Additional explanations are written sideways in the map. The small table at center shows the circumference of the globe on various parallels and the widths of several zones. At bottom is a chart showing the lengths of rivers in each hemisphere. Map of North America to Illustrate Olney's School Geography - Maker: Robinson / Olney
Antique hand colored map of North America, published in Olney's School Geography in 1844 by Robinson. This neat map shows the continent during a time of great change. Texas was annexed in 1845 and the US acquired the land from California to Texas in 1848 after the Mexican-American war. The dating on this map is a bit odd because it was "Entered according to Act of Congress in the year 1844" yet the coloring of the map reflects later changes. Texas is labeled as though it were still separate but is colored as part of the US. The size of Mexico is noted as 1,100,000 square miles, which would have been its pre-war size. It is possible that the printing plate was continued to be used and the coloring adapted for the new changes until a new plate could be made (although it is a bit worrisome that a school geography would have noticeably inaccurate information!). On this map England owned Canada and Russia owned Alaska. The map also indicates populations, distances, and symbols with meanings that are not quite clear. Good antique condition with a few minor stains, some edge wear, and light toning. Measures approx. 8.75 x 10.75 inches to the neatline.

The map is done in a bird's eye view style with wagon trains, tipis, herds of Buffalo, the Rocky Mountains. Covered wagons, mountains, tipis, and settlers fill the top and bottom borders, along with state seals, and in the side borders are portraits of notable people and scenes of life on the Oregon Trail. This map was reproduced again in the 1980s with slightly different coloring, but we know that this is the 1960s version because of the copyright in the lower right corner. Very good condition with one crease in the upper right. Measures approx. 17.25 x 32.75 inches to the neatline.
