North America
Antique hand colored map of North America by Thomas Kitchin, engraved for Jno. Harrison by G. Terry. This collectible early map of North America and the United States features early state shapes, including Virginia stretching to the Great Lakes and Georgia, North and South Carolina reaching west to the Mississippi River. Also notable is the lack of the Rocky Mountains and the inclusion of Quivira. This map indulges delightfully in speculative cartography by including the Snowy Mountains near the west coast, and the River of the West, which connects the Pacific to Quinipique Lake, which then connects to Lake Superior and the Atlantic via Hudson's Bay or the St Lawrence River. The North Western area is left mostly blank with a note: "These Parts are unknown" and the land extends north and west without end. Relief is shown pictorialy. Colors are likely later. Overall very good condition with some very slight spots and soiling. Approx. 13 x 15.25 inches to the neatline. **SOLD**
