Map of Havana and Havana Harbor Showing the Fortifications and Public Buildings - Maker: Buek / Boston Sunday Herald
Antique printed color map fo Havana and Havana Harbor, by G.H. Buek & Co for the Boston Sunday Herald. This map was issued as a supplement to the Boston Sunday Herald on Sunday, May 22, 1898. In February of that year, the USS Maine battleship exploded and sank, killing nearly thre-quarters of her crew, an event that would have been widely reported on and talked about. American newspapers, engaging in yellow journalism to boost circulation, claimed that the Spanish were responsible for the ship's destruction. The phrase, "Remember the Maine! To hell with Spain!" became a rallying cry for action. Although the Maine explosion was not a direct cause, it served as a catalyst that accelerated the events leading up to the war. The actual cause of the explosion seems likely to have been an accident, possibly caused by a coal bunker fire. This map shows clearly the location of the Maine when she exploded. Fair to good antique condition with some spots and stains, some small tears and creases, archival tape repairs on back of paper. Measures approx. 9.75 x 14.5 inches.
