Rare and unusual boxed Jigsaw Puzzle Map of the State of New York. Chromolithograph paper on wood, 1880, by Rev. E.J. Clemens, map by J.H. Colton 1855. The box which holds the puzzle map measures approx. 9.25 x 7.25 x 2.25 inches, and is decorated on the lid by a beautifully colored illustration with characters representing all the nations of the world, as well as Uncle Sam. The box contains the Jigsaw Puzzle Map of the State of New York, which, when assembled, measures approx. 16 x 12.25 inches, and features a map by J.H. Colton. On the reverse of the assembled puzzle map is a colorful advertising image for Sherwin Williams Paints, which includes a charming central portrait of a young child with a large paintbrush, surrounded by interesting vignettes. The puzzle and box are both in very good condition, with rich, bright and vibrant original color. There is one minor repair on the box lid, small repairs along the base of the box, and a minor crease. Hand colored antique map showing part of New England with New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, Virginia, and part of West Virginia. The maker of this map is unknown, the map was published in a school geography book c. 1850. An inset map at top shows the vicinity of Quebec and an image depicts the Death of Wolfe, copied from the well-known 1770 painting by Benjamin West depicting the death of British General James Wolfe at the 1759 Battle of Quebec during the French and Indian War. Hand coloring is probably recent, although not done by Maps of Antiquity. Very good condition, with some very light staining at bottom. Approx. 7 x 4.25 inches to neatline.
