Antique hand colored map of parts of five states in the midwest, published in 1863 by Johnson and Ward. During this time the states in the west and midwest were changing rapidly and maps from this time are like a glimpse back in time. In this map, the Dakotas have not yet been separated into North Dakota and South Dakota, and Montana and Wyoming do not yet exist- Idaho stretches right to Nebraska. This map shows some of the passes through the Rocky mountains, the railroads, the local native tribe names, and the distances by river to other cities in the west. Good to very good overall antique condition with overall toning, and minor foxing and edge tears in margin. approx. 13 x 16 inches

Antique hand colored map showing part of the northern half of the United States by Ettling, from the Weekly Dispatch Atlas of 1863. Shows what is now Montana, Wyoming, Utah, Colorado, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, and Kansas. Many of the western states were still being formed at this time. You will notice that Nebraska, Minnesota, and Kansas have far more land than they do today. Good to very good condition with minor edge wear, minor spotting, and slight creasing at center. Antique hand colored map showing the formation of the states and territories in the Midwest in 1864, by Johnson & Ward. This map shows North and South Dakota as one Dakota, which also stretches over to include Wyoming. Includes Colorado when it was a territory. Also shows the beginning of railroads in this area, with a few lines built, and other lines shown as proposed or explored. Good condition with many small tears at bottom edge into border. Some of these tears have been repaired with tape that may or may not be archival. Approx. 12.75 x 15.75 inches to the outer border edge.

This map shows North and South Dakota as one Dakota, and Wyoming as a brand new territory (the lettering for the name seems like it was scratched in to the plate rather than etched darker like the other states). Wyoming has a small area in the west that it no longer owns. Also shows the beginning of railroads in this area, with a few lines built, and other lines shown as proposed. Also shows the "Emigrant Route" which was the route west. Good condition with a few small tears at bottom edge but not into border. Also a few light brown spots in the margin. Approx. 17 x 23.25 inches to the outer border edge. **SOLD**
