The color of the ocean is printed but the outlines are hand colored. This Antique hand colored map from Mitchell's 1866 New General Atlas shows countries, major towns, water bodies, land and coastal features, and railroads. States in the US are not marked but Territories and new States are given larger lettering (Texas, Florida, California, Oregon, Washington, Utah, New Mexico, Nebraska, Kansas). Greenland is Danish America, Canada is British America, and Alaska is Russian America. This map is in very good antique condition with minimal overall toning. A few small edge tears. It measures approximately 13.5 x 11 inches.

Map of the Canadian Pacific Railway. Between Manitoba and Lake Nipissing. - Maker: Walling / Tackabury
Antique uncoloured map of part of Canada, published in Tackabury's Atlas of the Dominion of Canada, drawn, compiled, and edited by H.F. Walling and published by George N. Tackabury, 1875. This map does not show the railway as it was, but rather the proposed routes for the future railway. The new Liberal prime minister, Alexander Mackenzie, ordered construction of segments of the railway as a public enterprise under the supervision of the Department of Public Works led by Sandford Fleming (who is noted as the Engineer in Chief on this map). Surveying was carried out during the first years of a number of alternative routes in this virgin territory followed by construction of a telegraph along the lines that had been agreed upon. The Thunder Bay section linking Lake Superior to Winnipeg was commenced in 1875. Good to very good antique condition with overall toning, some mild staining particularly at the edges and center fold. Measures approx. 11 x 24.5 inches to the neatline.

Antique hand colored map of North and Central America, drawn by J. Dower and published by Orr & Company, c. 1849. Very interesting borders - this map shows the US in transition between the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo (Mexican-American War) in 1848 and the Compromise of 1850. The border with Mexico is still changing, as is the Texas border. Upper of New California encompasses Utah, Nevada, Arizona, and part of New Mexico. With the recent discoveries in the north made by Parry, Ross, and Franklin who were searching for a Northwest Passage. At bottom are diagrams showing the height above sea level for two parts of the continent. Very good condition with a few tiny spots, 8.25 x 10 inches.

Antique hand colored folding map of part of Canada and the United States, by Cross, 1833. This map shows the south-eastern part of Canada from Nova Scotia to Lake Huron. Interesting aspects of this map include the Erie Canal, 5 proposed canals in New York, one proposed canal in Ohio, and the Maine border, which was the cause of the Aroostook War. This map shows the British version of the border, which had been a point of contention between the two countries for many years. Also of note: this map shows the region of Toronto but not as a city.
