Migeon's "Geographie Universelle," 1884, one of the last hand colored atlases, in French, showing Central America and the Caribbean in the late 19th century, with a highly significant inset of the Isthmus of Panama, where three years prior to the publication of this atlas, the French began work on the Panama Canal. While the inset map identifies the "canal," the French effort, which was poorly planned and executed, went bankrupt by 1889 and had resulted in the deaths of 22,000 laborers due to malaria and yellow fever. The U.S. took over the project in the early 20th century, and the completed canal was not opened until 1914; includes accompanying narrative pages (although text on the canal is outdated and only speaks of the grand plan for one).
