Antique map from "The Physical Atlas of Natural Phenomena" by Alexander Keith Johnston, published by William Blackwood and Sons in 1856. This beautifully detailed map, entitled The Geological Structure of the Globe According to Ami Boule with Corrections and Additions to 1855, is a very early example of the use of printed color. Insets include the Illustrations of the Synchronism of Parallel Chains, the North and South Poles (with "supposed" Antarctic continent), The Principal Mountains of the Globe Arranged According to the Geographical Longitude with Elevations Above the Level of the Sea, and Directions of the Systems of Mountains as They Appear at Milford. In very good antique condition with some overall toning and some very minor foxing, this piece measures approximately 20 x 24 inches.
