The United States - Maker: Arbuckle
Arbuckle Coffee Geographical Print was produced in 1890 and is an exceptionally fine example of a chromolithograph (early printed color). The quality is evident in the sharpness and clarity of color as well as the artistic composition and amount of information in each piece. The place-based images were produced as “trade cards” for each state and country throughout the world. They were placed in coffee cans as an incentive or reward to buy the coffee. Two atlases (a United States and a World) were created using the images. Our Arbuckle prints are originals, in excellent condition, and either single or double matted as shown. Image size is 3” x 5”, matted to 8” x 10”. While these prints can fit into stock size frames, we recommend you consider custom conservation framing, also available at Maps of Antiquity, to protect the prints for many years.

Polysiphonia nigrescens.*****SOLD***** - Maker: Bradbury
Antique colored intaglio from "Seaweeds of the British Isles", Nature-printed by Henry Bradbury in 1857. Nature printing was a process used in the Nineteenth Century to capture the exact details of plants and insects. The object itself was first impressed into a harder material which could then be used to make the printing surface. Wood, softened by steam, and various types of metal were used to make a mold from the plants. This process involved passing the object to be reproduced between a steel plate and a lead plate, through two rollers closely screwed together. The high pressure imbedded the object into the lead plate. Colored ink was then applied to the stamped lead plate to produce a copy. The process was ideal for showing the thin two-dimensional fronds of ferns and seaweed, but less successful with more fleshy plants. This Nature-print shows exquisite, accurate detail; excellent condition, matted, 8.5 x 5.5 inches.*****SOLD*****
