A note on the right side says that the depths are in English measurements, which were different from French measurements- 8 English depth measurements equal 9 French depth measurements. Antique printed color atlas of the Philippines published in 1900. The maps in the atlas were drafted by Philippine draftsmen under the direction of Rev. Jose Algue, S. J., director of the Manila Jesuit Observatory, and the atlas was published by the US Coast and Geodetic Survey. The story of how that came about is printed in the beginning of the atlas, after the two title pages- one in Spanish and one in English. The text on the maps is in Spanish. All maps appear to be single sheet with nothing printed on the verso. The maps are in very good condition. The atlas cover is worn at the edges but solid. Some of the pages are cracking near the binding (see the last photo). Ex Libris. The atlas size is approx. 15 x 13.25 inches.

The Maritimes seem to be well understood except for the apparent absence of Prince Edward Island. South of Canada seems to get a bit less reliable. Very interesting and visually appealing map! Inset map shows the Southern Portion of the Peninsula of Patagonia on same scale as the main map, with the Falkland Islands. At the time of listing, this map was not available anywhere else. It has a copyright date of 1879 but may have been published in a slightly later atlas. This was produced during the time of Argentina's "Conquest of the Desert" during which many native people of Patagonia were killed or displaced in an effort to extend Argentine power in the as-yet uncolonized area. This military campaign effectively ended the possibility of Chilean expansion in Patagonia. Fascinating map produced in a time of great change in this region.
