Map of the Siege of Vicksburg, Miss. Under the Command of Maj. Gen. U.S. Grant - Maker: Bien / US War Dept
Antique hand-colored Civil War battle map published by the US War Department. Shown on this map is the area around Vicksburg, Mississippi, where an important battle of the American Civil War took place. In May and June of 1863, Maj. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant’s armies converged on Vicksburg, investing the city and entrapping a Confederate army under Lt. Gen. John Pemberton. On July 4, Vicksburg surrendered after prolonged siege operations. This was the culmination of one of the most brilliant military campaigns of the war. With the loss of Pemberton’s army and this vital stronghold on the Mississippi, the Confederacy was effectively split in half. Grant's successes in the West boosted his reputation, leading ultimately to his appointment as General-in-Chief of the Union armies.(source: nps.gov) This map shows Federal works in blue and Rebel works in red. It includes Cross-sections of Federal and Rebel batteries, as well as profiles of parts of the areas to give us a clear understanding of the topography involved in the battle. This map is dated 1863, although probably published in 1867 and possibly by Bien, although the lithographer is not specifically noted. Informative, rare, and collectible. North Anna - Maker: Bien / US War Dept
Antique hand-colored Civil War battle map published by the US War Department. Shown on this map is the area around North Anna River, Virginia, where an inconclusive battle of the American Civil War took place. "After the fighting at Spotsylvania Court House, Grant continued his Overland Offensive against Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia. He was brought up short on the North Anna River by Lee’s widely studied “hog snout line,” which forced Grant to divide his army into three parts in order to attack. On May 23, 1864, one of A.P. Hill’s divisions assaulted the V Corps which had crossed the river at Jericho Mill, resulting in bloody see-saw fighting. On the 24th, Union infantry was repulsed at Ox Ford (the snout) but advanced to near the Doswell House on the Confederate right. Lee hoped to strike an offensive blow, but he was ill, and the opportunity for defeating an isolated part of the Federal army passed. Once the threat of Lee’s position was revealed, Grant withdrew both wings of the army back across the North Anna River. Grant outflanked the position by moving downstream and continued his advance on Richmond." (source: nps.gov) This map shows Federal works in blue and Rebel works in red. This map is dated 1867 and engraved by Bien. Very good restored condition with some repaired tears and repaired paper loss in upper right corner. Antique black and white nautical chart of part of the southern east coast of the United States. Published originally in 1876, this printing is from 1880. This chart includes modern day Darien, St. Simon's Island, Brunswick, Jekyl Island, Cumberland Island to St. Marys and Fernandina. This chart is in original condition, meaning that no restoration work has been done on it, and it is in very good to excellent overall antique condition. This was a working nautical chart and would have been used on ships, so finding an unrestored chart in this condition is rare. It does have a few small spots, some slight wrinkling, and some minor edge wear. Original linen backing. Approx. 41 x 32 inches. **NOTE- because this map requires extra insurance for shipping, an additional charge will appear on your card after your original purchase.
