Antique hand colored map from "A Complete Historical, Chronological, And Geographical American Atlas ... ", by Carey & Lea, 1827. This map shows the boundary lines as the Americans claimed it during the dispute called the Aroostook War. In the 1830s William, the King of the Netherlands, was chosen as a neutral arbitrator and he suggested compromised boundaries but the US rejected William's suggestion and ultimately lost 900 square miles in the final settlement. Despite being called a war, no battles were ever fought. Surrounded by text with information on topography and water bodies, soil, climate, towns, commerce, education, religion, government, population and history. Good condition, slightly darkened along center glue line, overall toning, some light staining, and some tears at the paper edges. Measures approx. 16.5 x 20.5 inches to the outer neatline.
