Antique hand colored map of the lower western states of the United States, by Ettling and published in the Weekly Dispatch on January 31st, 1858. At the time of publication, the gold rush was beginning to slow down, but California has good detail and information thanks to the rush. The neighboring states are notable for their unusual boundaries- Utah stretches from California (no Nevada yet) to Long's Peak in what is now Colorado. New Mexico also borders California (no Arizona yet) but doesn't have an eastern boundary in this map. Also includes Baja California and part of Mexico. Good antique condition with some light stains and a flattened vertical fold. Approx. 16.75 x 11.75 inches to the neatline.

During this time the states in the west and midwest were changing rapidly and maps from this time are like a glimpse back in time. In this map, the Dakotas have not yet been separated into North Dakota and South Dakota, and Montana and Wyoming do not yet exist- Idaho stretches right to Nebraska. This map shows some of the passes through the Rocky mountains, the railroads, the local native tribe names, and the distances by river to other cities in the west. Includes mining districts, emigrant trails, the Santa Fe Trail, the Pony Express Route and several proposed railroads, American Indian tribes, geological features, and political divisions. The Grand Canyon is labeled as the Colorado Canon and we have read that the horizontal county lines are a continuing feature from previous maps, but the counties were never truly divided in that way. Original hand coloring, good detail of landforms, water bodies, and towns. Measures approx. 17.25 x 24.5 inches. Good antique condition with overall toning and foxing.

This map is in fair to good antique condition, with no margin at all outside the decorative border and acid burn from tape throughout the top decorative border. The map itself is in very good condition and could be framed with a mat covering the decorative border to hide the imperfections. A few minor spots. Measures approx. 16 1/2" x 24 1/2" (h x w)

Very interesting borders - these seem to show the country in transition between the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo (Mexican-American War) in 1848 and the Compromise of 1850. The border with Mexico is still changing, as is the Texas border. Upper of New California encompasses Utah, Nevada, Arizona, and part of New Mexico. At bottom are diagrams showing the height above sea level for two parts of the continent. Very good condition with a few tiny spots, 8.25 x 10 inches.

Territories in the Valley of the Mississippi. From The World as it Is, and as it Has Been: Or, a Comprehensive Geography and History, Ancient and Modern, by Samuel Griswold Goodrich, 1855, published by Colton, an unusual mid-19th century map of Nebraska, Minnesota, Kansas, New Mexico, and Oklahoma marked as Indian Territory, a massive region in the center of the United States before most of the western states existed, with all the Indian tribes and their locations, the Rocky Mountains, the Great American Desert, and the great rivers that sustained the nation's mid-section at the same time that westward expansion marked the beginning of the end to the Native Americans' way of life. Includes key to areas of the various territories in square miles, and Indian populations of same in 1850, as well as the portions thereof that were considered civilized. Verso features a history of the State of Iowa, with engraving of Black Hawk, leader of the Sawk Tribe, and the extraordinary speech he made upon his capture. Very good condition with overall toning, measures approx. 8 x 9.75 inches.

The text below the image corresponds to the image and indicates the land features in the area above the text. This was published in the Pacific Railroad Survey in 1861. The Pacific Railroad Survey was part of the US Railroad Exploration and Surveys, which was focused on encouraging private investors to invest in the railroads. Folded as issued. Very good condition with some small seam separations, overall toning with darker toning along the folds and edges. This map shows North and South Dakota as one Dakota, and Wyoming as a brand new territory (the lettering for the name seems like it was scratched in to the plate rather than etched darker like the other states). Wyoming has a small area in the west that it no longer owns. Also shows the beginning of railroads in this area, with a few lines built, and other lines shown as proposed. Also shows the "Emigrant Route" which was the route west. Good condition with a few small tears at bottom edge but not into border. Also a few light brown spots in the margin. Antique printed color pictorial map showing the historic Pony Express Route, between St. Joseph, Missouri and Sacramento California, and listing each stop that was made along the route. The trail travels through the present-day states of Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, Colorado, Wyoming, Utah, Nevada, and California. Surrounding the map are illustrations showing picturesque scenes of the Old West. At the bottom of the map is a quote from Howard R. Driggs regarding the historical significance of the Pony Express. Map is by W. H. Jackson, and published by the American Pioneer Trails Association "in commemoration of the Pony Express Centennial," 1961. Very good overall antique condition with some very mild toning of the paper. Measures approximately 8.5" x 28.75" (H x W) to the neatline and page measures 10.25" x 30" in its entirety.
