Minots Ledge, off Boston Harbor - Maker: US Coast Survey
Hand colored antique coast report chart from 1854 by the U.S. Coast Survey showing Minots Ledge off Boston Harbor. The chart says 1853 but this chart was published in 1854. Shows Cohasset Harbor and Old Harbor, as well as several saltworks and a marine railroad (railroad tracks that go directly into the water, in order to allow a rail car to go into the water and under a boat, which is secured to the car and both are removed from the water, allowing work to be done on the boat). Also includes information on islands, rivers, water depths, and shoals. At top and bottom are profile views of the Outer and Inner Minots includins water depths. Very good antique condition minor toning at center fold. This chart has been restored- cleaned and rebacked - and then hand colored. Approx. 20 x 20 inches to the neatline.

Colorful early 20th century map of Boston commissioned by The Boston Five Cents Savings Bank and drawn by Charles R. Capon in 1929, on the eve of the stock market crash and the Great Depression. The city is depicted as a neat and tidy collection of red-roofed buildings with the bank holding center stage and other landmarks--the State House, Old North Church, Faneuil Hall, etc.--prominently labeled with scrolls, and the Public Garden with its swans and flowers. Eight heraldic shields labeled Medicine, Law, Science, Industry, Letters, Music, Art and Trade convey civic pride. Folded into quadrants inside front and back covers, full map unfolded measures 18.25 x 24 inches, very good condition.

The maker of this map is unknown, the map was published in a school geography book c. 1850. An inset map at top shows the vicinity of Quebec and an image depicts the Death of Wolfe, copied from the well-known 1770 painting by Benjamin West depicting the death of British General James Wolfe at the 1759 Battle of Quebec during the French and Indian War. Hand coloring is probably recent, although not done by Maps of Antiquity. Very good condition, with some very light staining at bottom. Approx. 7 x 4.25 inches to neatline.

This map is the center page in a folded booklet published for travelers. It includes a lot of travel information with further maps and images. Very good condition with very minor water staining in top and bottom margin, and a tear into the map at top center. The map measures approx. 15.25 x 8 inches to the neatline.
