No. 1 Eldridge's New Chart of Vineyard Sound and Nantucket Shoals - Maker: Eldridge
Antique nautical chart showing Nantucket Sound, Vineyard Sound, and the shoals near Nantucket and Monomoy, by George Eldridge, copyright 1894 and published by S. Thaxter & Son in 1904. This chart encompasses the area from the Elizabeth Islands to the shoals east of Chatham and Nantucket. Includes all of the small harbors on the south side of the Cape, such as Osterville, Waquoit, Lewis Bay, Chatham, and Woods Hole. Yellow marks indicate lighthouses or light ships. Red lines indicate the area where the lighthouses show red. These charts were hand colored (sometimes by Eldridge's daughters). Well known for their graphic appearance, Eldridge's charts showed only the information necessary for sailors and sea men, in contrast to the government's charts of the time that included topographic information. This clarity made their charts quite popular with navigators and that popularity continues today, although for more aesthetic reasons. Very good condition with some surface soil and two stamps that indicate the chart was sold by Steamer Susie D in Vineyard Haven. Some pencil plotting. Backed with original linen.

Cape Cod Canal Toll Sheet *****SOLD***** - Maker: Boston, Cape Cod, & New York Canal Company
Antique toll sheet for the Cape Cod Canal listing the toll amounts for various types of ships that would use the canal. This is an original from 1915, when the Canal was first opened and when it was owned by the Boston, Cape Cod, & New York Canal Company. It was privately funded and owned when it was first constructed, however it proved to be less lucrative than expected because its narrow width and a few accidents gave it a bad reputation. In 1918 a German U-boat surfaced three miles off Orleans and shelled the tug Perth Amboy and her string of four barges. The Director General of the United States Railroad Administration took over jurisdiction and operation of the canal four days later under a presidential proclamation. The United States Army Corps of Engineers re-dredged the channel to 25 feet (7.62 m) deep while it remained under government control until 1920. In 1928, the government purchased the canal for use as a free public waterway. This 1915 toll sheet is a unique piece of Cape Cod history. Very good condition with slight toning at edges. Approx. 17 x 8.5 inches to the paper edges. **SOLD**
