This map shows some of the passes through the Rocky mountains, the railroads, the local native tribe names, and the distances by river to other cities in the west. This map includes the cities of Memphis, Vicksburg, New Orleans, and many more important locations along the river. Colored by state. Verso is text concerning the importance of the Mississippi River in the Civil War. "The possession of the Mississippi," said General Sherman, in his speech at St Louis just after the close of the war, "is the possession of America." Good to very good condition, this map has some small tears and stains that are almost entirely in the margins. Approx. 14 x 9 inches to the neatline. Color may be later.

Antique hand colored map of the Midwestern states of the United States including Michigan, Ohio, part of Virginia, Kentucky, Indiana, Illinois, and Missouri, from the Atlas Designed to Illustrate the Malte-Brun School Geography, by M. Malte-Brun, 1833. Map was first created in 1832 and is dated on the bottom with that year but published in the 1833 atlas. This map is titled The Western States because they were the farthest west states in the United States at that time. Very good condition with light small spot in margin, outside border, 9.75 x 15.75 inches. Has been lightly restored. **SOLD**

Territories in the Valley of the Mississippi. From The World as it Is, and as it Has Been: Or, a Comprehensive Geography and History, Ancient and Modern, by Samuel Griswold Goodrich, 1855, published by Colton, an unusual mid-19th century map of Nebraska, Minnesota, Kansas, New Mexico, and Oklahoma marked as Indian Territory, a massive region in the center of the United States before most of the western states existed, with all the Indian tribes and their locations, the Rocky Mountains, the Great American Desert, and the great rivers that sustained the nation's mid-section at the same time that westward expansion marked the beginning of the end to the Native Americans' way of life. Includes key to areas of the various territories in square miles, and Indian populations of same in 1850, as well as the portions thereof that were considered civilized. Verso features a history of the State of Iowa, with engraving of Black Hawk, leader of the Sawk Tribe, and the extraordinary speech he made upon his capture. Very good condition with overall toning, measures approx. 8 x 9.75 inches.

Antique hand colored map showing the formation of the states and territories in the Midwest and West in 1865, by A.J. Johnson. This map shows North and South Dakota as one Dakota, and Wyoming as a brand new territory (the lettering for the name seems like it was scratched in to the plate rather than etched darker like the other states). Wyoming has a small area in the west that it no longer owns. Also shows the beginning of railroads in this area, with a few lines built, and other lines shown as proposed. Also shows the "Emigrant Route" which was the route west. Good condition with a few small tears at bottom edge but not into border. Also a few light brown spots in the margin. Approx. 17 x 23.25 inches to the outer border edge. **SOLD**

Antique printed color pictorial map showing the historic Pony Express Route, between St. Joseph, Missouri and Sacramento California, and listing each stop that was made along the route. The trail travels through the present-day states of Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, Colorado, Wyoming, Utah, Nevada, and California. Surrounding the map are illustrations showing picturesque scenes of the Old West. At the bottom of the map is a quote from Howard R. Driggs regarding the historical significance of the Pony Express. Map is by W. H. Jackson, and published by the American Pioneer Trails Association "in commemoration of the Pony Express Centennial," 1961. Very good overall antique condition with some very mild toning of the paper. Measures approximately 8.5" x 28.75" (H x W) to the neatline and page measures 10.25" x 30" in its entirety.

Printed color folding map of the North-Eastern US and Canadian border featuring the R,W,&O railroad. Published circa 1890 by Rand Avery Supply Co. This map shows the rail road routes with stops and towns from Nova Scotia to St Louis, Missouri and from Philadelphia to Quebec. Includes St Andrews, Bar Harbor, Portland, Boston, New York, Long Island, Bangor, Buffalo, Montreal, Cincinnati, Chicago, the Great Lakes, Ottawa, the Adirondack, Catskill, Green, and White Mountains. This map has an interesting perspective because most of it is very normal until you reach the top, where it becomes stretched and rolls outward to the horizon line, with Quebec sitting atop the horizon. Very good antique condition, folded as issued. Photo was taken with the map under plastic and some glare may appear that is not part of the map itself. Approx. 8 x 22.5 inches.
