United States DC
Antique hand colored map of the U.S. capital city, Washington DC, in the final year of the Civil War, from Johnson's New Illustrated Family Atlas of the World, showing L'Enfant's famous grid pattern with major thoroughfares radiating from the White House, then called the President's House; the Capitol; and other public buildings and spaces marked. Includes engraved vignettes of the Capitol, Smithsonian, and a remarkable early engraving of the future Washington Monument with a fanciful temple-like octogonal base that was never built. Interestingly, it appears that there were several 1864 atlases published by Johnson & Ward and this map is one that has slight differences between the earlier and later publications in that year. Decorative border, very good condition with toning and a few spots. Paper is fragile. Measures approx. 12.5 x 15.5 inches to outer border edge. **SOLD**
