Two Antique hand colored maps of the Polar regions that comprise a double spread from Colton's World Atlas, 1887. The left sheet shows the Arctic Circle including the Dominion of Canada and the Russian Empire as well as Greenland, Iceland, Spitzbergen, and the Behring Strait. The right sheet of Antarctica shows the limited extent of geographical knowledge at the time; includes text exploring notations of the various explorers and their routes and findings up until the date of publication: "The tracks of the different navigators represented on this map show how far the Polar regions have been penetrated by vessels". Fair antique condition, light water damage mostly outside border, paper is slightly wavy and toned overall, Approx. 16 x 26.5 inches.
