Canada Louisiane et Terres Angloises - Maker: D'Anville
Set of two joinable antique hand colored maps showing parts of Canada and the northern United States, by D'Anville, 1755. These maps are part of a four map set, however only two are currently available. Shows from Newfoundland south to New York including New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, the Saint Lawrence River, the Great Lakes, and as far west as just beyond the Mississippi River. In the west, the areas are named after the native peoples. The Mississippi River has a note that the source is still unknown. These maps represent a time in the continent's history when the white settlers were exploring towards the west via river and settlements were almost exclusively on rivers or oceans as methods of access. Very good overall antique condition. Color is almost certainly not original. Each map is approx. 19 x 22 inches to the neatline.

A New Map of North America, with the West India Islands - Maker: Laurie & Whittle
Antique hand colored map of North America published in 1794 by Laurie & Whittle. The full title is "A New Map of North America, with the West India Islands, Divided according to the Preliminary Articles of Peace, Signed at Versailles, 20 Jan. 1783 wherein are particularly distinguished the United States, and the several Provinces, Governments &ca. which compose the British Dominions laid down according to the Latest Surveys and corrected from the Original Materials of Governor Pownall, Member of Parliament." This map was originally published in 1755 and updated many times as more land was explored and land rights changed. This map was issued in two parts, north and south, and each has folds as issued. Includes text at the top explaining the fishing rights of the United States. Highly detailed ornamental cartouche. Lower inset map is "A Passage By Land to California" and upper inset map is "A Particular map of Baffin and Hudson's Bay". Very good antique condition with some spotting. It is in two pieces and includes folds as issued. Approx. 40 x 45 together. Each half is approx. 20 x 45.

A General Map of North America from the best Authorities. - Maker: Jedidiah Morse
Black and White Antique Map of North America, by Jedidiah Morse, from "The American Universal Geography", 1796. Includes New Albion and Sir Francis Drake's Harbor in California. New Albion, also known as Nova Albion, was the name of all North America north of Mexico, from "sea to sea," claimed by Sir Francis Drake for England in 1579. The extent of New Albion and the location of Drake's port have long been debated by historians, with most believing that he came ashore in the Bay Area on the coast of northern California. Also includes the River of the West, an imaginary river that connects the east and west coasts (promoted by Thomas Jefferson). Quivira also appears on this map. Quivira was one of the Seven Cities of Gold that drove many people to search North America for these cities. St Louis is on this map with its previous name: New Madrid. This map appeared in several editions of the Morse atlas. Very good overall antique condition, matted, 7.75 x 9.25 inches.

The United States stretch to just west of Lake Superior and Florida is colored to match Mexico as it was under Spanish rule until 1821. This early map of North America has many interesting features: The map labels Quivera, one of the "Seven Cities of Gold" names by Coronado but never found, and Teguayo, another legendary location. Many of the states extend to the Mississippi River, including West Florida, which is separate from East Florida. There are several areas labeled "Parts Unknown" or "Land seen by the Spaniards 1775." This map reflects Cook's "discoveries" but much is still unknown, including Vancouver despite the fact that the Nootka Sound is included. Hawaii is labeled as both Sandwich Islands and O why-hee. this map is in good to very good condition with some minor vertical wrinkles and some light spots.
