Antique hand colored map of Central America showing Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, San Salvador, Costa Rica. Five inset maps showing the US constructed Panama Railway across Panama (opened in 1855), the "Nicaragua Route", the Harbor of San Juan de Nicaragua, the City of Panama, and Manzanilla Island Aspinwall City (Colon, Panama). The final opening of the Panama Canal ocurred in the early 1900s, however talk of trying to create a waterway through Central America had been going on since the 1500s and heated up in the 1800s. Very interesting pre-canal map. Very good condition with small brown spots. Aprrox. 12.5 x 15.5 inches to the outer edge of the decorative border.

Antique hand colored map, from J. Migeon's "Geographie Universelle," 1884, one of the last hand colored atlases, in French, showing Central America and the Caribbean in the late 19th century, with a highly significant inset of the Isthmus of Panama, where three years prior to the publication of this atlas, the French began work on the Panama Canal. While the inset map identifies the "canal," the French effort, which was poorly planned and executed, went bankrupt by 1889 and had resulted in the deaths of 22,000 laborers due to malaria and yellow fever. The U.S. took over the project in the early 20th century, and the completed canal was not opened until 1914; includes accompanying narrative pages (although text on the canal is outdated and only speaks of the grand plan for one).
