Black and white antique map showing Nantucket Sound, the Atlantic Ocean, and Monomoy Island of Chatham, MA, including Handkerchief shoals, Bearses shoal, and more. This map was drawn by Captain W.H. Bixby, Captain of Engineers for the US Corps of Engineers in July 1893. It shows the locations and names of various shipwrecks in the area and details whether they were removed in 1892-93 or in the progress of removal. Very good antique condition with two small tears with tape repairs. The antique paper is very thin and the tape is slightly visible through the paper, although this effect is decreased when there is white behind the map.approx. 4.5 x 8 inches

This antique coastal chart shows the coasts and waters surrounding and to the south of Chatham, including Old Harbor, Stage Harbor, Nauset Beach, Morris Island, Monomoy, Broken Rips Shoal, Bearse's Shoal, Butler's Hole, and the Handkerchief Shoals in Nantucket Sound. Old Harbor Station is at the extreme southern end of North Beach. Includes the Twin Lights and a Coast Guard station on Morris Island. There is a sand bar just off Chatham light from migration landward of old North Beach- seen in postcards of this era. Oddly, this chart does not show the Chatham branch of the railroad. Does show the inland route of the Nantucket Railroad. Includes bathometric data, as well as information on lights, light vessels, buoys, life saving stations, weather signal stations, and tides.
